Emigrating to Seattle
Installation: sleeping bag, cardboard boxes, suitcases, backpacks, artwork portfolios
[size]. 2019
NFS
This claustrophobic piece condenses Lucy Garnett’s experience of preparing to emigrate. The artist’s husband, Geoff, left England to work in Seattle on July 4, 2011. Garnett then spent a year clearing and packing up the house in the Eynsham where they had raised their girls.
The night before the container came to take everything away to ship, she slept badly, walled in by boxes. The night before she left the house, three months later, she slept in a sleeping bag on the wide-open floor with only a few suitcases, backpacks, and portfolios of artwork.
